So, on this edition of Dumb Movie Questions we are going to talk about Disney’s animated classic Beauty and the Beast because I was inspired by the new trailer for the live action film coming up. Now there are a bunch of weird things you can look at in this movie most of which you can just watch this movie and not really even think about until you start putting bits and pieces together. Then after your like me and see it for the 30th time seeing this movie you’re like “behuh!!!???” In particular we are going to explore the weird mystery of:
How does Chip Potts the teacup even exist?
(First of all spoiler warning if you're the one person in the world who hasn't seen this movie then stop reading and go see it now!)
I am of course referring to the cute and lovable teacup that follows around his mother Mrs. Potts the teapot. Let’s put aside the fact that Mrs. Potts seems way too old to have a child that young and it really doesn’t help that she’s also voiced by Angela Lansbury but if you pick up on things in the movie and then do the math you quickly come to a shocking revelation and end up asking yourself: how does he exist at all???
At this point you’re probably asking yourself: "what’s the big deal? The lady had a son and then the whole castle got cursed along with both of them that turned them into a tea set." Let’s start with, how old do you think Chip is based on the movie? To me judging by his behavior and his human appearance at the end of the movie he can’t be older than 8 years old.
Ok that’s all fine and dandy but then you hear Lumiere say in the song Be Our Guest “TEN YEARS we’ve been rusting, needing so much more than dusting…” That’s right they’ve all been cursed to be household objects for ten years! If Chip is around 8 years old that means he was born after the curse was placed on them?
This opens a whole can of worms of questions like can the objects of the castle reproduce? Where is Mr. Potts? My guess would be in order for a Teapot to give birth to a teacup Mr. Potts had to have been a coffee mug or something… Also how do you explain the 2 dozen other teacups, did he have like 20 brothers and sisters?
I’m sure some of you astute readers out there probably came to the conclusion, well the curse probably just stopped their aging them and they’re all stuck at the age they were at when the curse was placed on them. Hold on second then, how would that explain the Beast/Prince? In the prologue of the movie it never states his age but it’s said that “The Rose she had offered, was truly an enchanted rose, which would bloom until his 21st year. If he could learn to love another and earn her love in return by the time the last petal fell then the spell would be broken…” So from that you can assume that he is 21 at the end of the movie when the last rose petal fell so from simple math he was 11 years when he was originally cursed. If their aging was stopped in their cursed form then Belle would have been the grossest cradle robber…
Again there’s no official answer from Disney but here’s my theory. What if the Beast/Prince was already older like 18 to 20 when he was cursed? That would explain that portrait that the Beast rips up that looks like his older self. How could that portrait have been painted to look like that if he was only 11 the last time he was human?
So everyone was cursed and transformed as they were and just never aged including Chip. Lumiere’s comments about it being ten years may have either been an exaggeration or they’ve been cooped up in the castle for so long that they’ve lost track of time. To him it may seem like ten years but really it’s probably only been closer to 1-3 years. There you have it, my take on the Beauty and the Beast curse and how Chip Potts exists. What are your thoughts? Let me know what you think down in the comments!
