Moana Review

IMDB Synopsis: In Ancient Polynesia, when a terrible curse incurred by the Demigod Maui reaches an impetuous Chieftain's daughter's island, she answers the Ocean's call to seek out the Demigod to set things right.

It’s been a little while since I’ve posted but I’m gonna try and catch up. There have been some awesome movies over the last few months and I want to definitely discuss them here. So let’s start with Moana! Disney’s third animated feature and 2nd from Disney Animation Studio of 2016 is without a doubt my favorite of the bunch. This movie is so gorgeous it really amazes me how they keep pushing the boundaries of computer animation quality. The animation may be great but the characters and story is where Moana really shine. I absolutely love the titular character of Moana, she is strong but has her moments of weakness making her seem real and very relatable. I also have to stop to mention that this movie has quite possibly my favorite Disney animal sidekick ever in the hilarious rooster Hei Hei, just watch the movie and you’ll understand why. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as Maui was an inspired choice! As one the most prolific actors working today he really brings a lot of energy and joy to this movie and makes a sarcastic and sometimes stand offish Maui really come across as charismatic and likable, also who knew he could sing. Bringing me to my next point of, wow, the songs in Moana are incredible! You will be humming these tunes right along with the past Disney classics. Lin Manuel Miranda and company have really brought they’re amazing talents to this one. There are some really touching moments in Moana that really hit hard and show the audience about knowing who you are and trusting that to guide you. I would equate this movie to be a sort of mashup of The Little Mermaid, The Lion King, Mulan and Hercules. It seems to borrow small elements from each to create something that is entirely its own and creates a movie that is fun and heartfelt. I definitely recommend you see this movie, for me it is up there with some of Disney’s great fairy tale musical movies. A fun time for everyone, adults and kids and everything in between.
