La La Land Review

IMDB Synopsis: A jazz pianist falls for an aspiring actress in Los Angeles.

For me La La Land directed by Damien Chazelle is a very unique movie. I haven’t watched too many classic musicals that La La Land draws inspiration from as well as pay homage to but this seems to emulate that style incredibly well. As you can tell from my other reviews I’m more action genre oriented especially of the superhero flavor. So when a movie like this comes along it’s very eye opening. I loved this movie, for its great music, charming characters, and emotional story.

The opening of this movie immediately sets you up for the magic that you are in for. This opening is just simply amazing from the dance number the insane choreography that went into it and all seemingly shot in one take and this is true throughout, there are some beautiful and memorizing musical numbers. I did feel that both Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone’s singing weren’t as great but it did help to keep the characters a little more grounded. The two main characters, Mia and Sebastian, as a whole despite their ridiculous good looks were easy to identify with. I could easily picture myself in their struggles. They have hopes and dreams then struggle to achieve them to the point where they begin to question their belief in themselves. These are things that I know everyone has dealt with and you can easily see yourself in these characters. La La Land is fun and a beautifully shot movie but what resonated so much with me was the themes and overall message of this movie of staying true to yourself and following your dreams. We all have them; they may not be as ambitious as becoming a movie star or a professional musician but we all know what it’s like to want to achieve something but come up against road blocks. Additionally, while “follow your dream” is a great message I really appreciated the theme of achieving your dreams may come at a cost. This movie visualizes this incredibly well in a very emotional moment towards end of the movie.

I loved La La Land I found it very charming and so relatable on so many levels that it hit me pretty hard emotionally. Aside from all of the emotional nonsense if you’re not into that this movie is just a lot of fun to watch, the music is awesome, the chemistry between Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling is a joy. Go see it and then enjoy the soundtrack! What was your favorite song in La La Land? Let me know in the comments, till next time!
