Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Review

At this point it’s probably no surprise that I love the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2, directed by James Gunn, is a movie that I’ve been very pumped up for! This being the first of THREE MCU movies we’re getting in 2017 is incredibly exciting! Guardians Vol. 2 builds very well on the first one but I do admit this movie does have a few problems with story pacing and structure but this is by far the most heartfelt and funniest movie of the franchise yet!

Vol. 2 does something that many movies don’t do. This movie went in a direction that I did not see at all, which was awesome because it kept me surprised. Vol. 2 does a great job of capturing the same fun team dynamic that we left off with the last movie but it takes it one step further and continues to build on it by showing how they’ve grown closer as friends as well as things that still divide them. Instead of getting the same old characters doing the same old thing we get to dive more into each of them and see them grow more. We get to dive in to the relationships between the various Guardians. It’s fun to see how the different pairs interact with each other. This is especially important to Vol. 2 because the themes of friendship, family and especially fatherly relationship are very prominent in the movie. Without going into spoilers you see all these themes play a huge role in the overall story. While I really enjoyed the story the second act of the movie really drags with a lot of exposition and explanation and nothing all that interesting happens also the Guardians are split up. One thing that was surprising for a movie that is a comedy and super funny is how it masterfully manages to walk the tight rope of balancing the darker and sadder tones with the hilarious tones. It gives the necessary weight to the heavy moments just long enough for it to be impactful then relieving you with a well-timed light hearted joke.

All the actors definitely brought their A-game but without a doubt Drax, Rocket and Yondu steal every scene they’re in whether it’s the deep emotional scenes or the over the top comical ones they’re great to watch. They all have great chemistry together and you really believe they’re a bickering group of friends that deep down love and care for each other. Visually Vol. 2 is gorgeous. There’s something to be said of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies because the other MCU movies have this sort of washed out color palette but Guardians is vibrant and colorful combine that with the fantastical worlds and set pieces it makes for a wonderful visual experience. It looks amazing on IMAX. Last but not least is the now famous Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack. Awesome Mix Vol. 2 is superb I love listening to it.  Just like the first one many of the songs are actually incorporated into the movie creatively. I personally really appreciate these mixes because it introduces me to songs that I would have never otherwise have discovered so I thank James Gunn for that!

Even with some minor flaws in pacing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is an incredibly fun movie to watch between the comedy, great action, and heart it’s hard to be disappointed. I don’t believe that it’s better than the first but it’s certainly a worthy successor and a great addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I honestly can’t wait for Avengers Infinity War where we’ll finally get to see the Avengers and Guardians meet, that is going to make for an epic moment in movie history! Until then, go see Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and let me know what you think!
