The Big Sick Review

The Big Sick was a movie that I’ve been interested in seeing all summer, what can I say I’m a sucker for feel good romantic comedy. This is a very unique movie in that it is based on the beginning of actor/writer Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon’s real life relationship and how they actually met. Kumail stars in the movie and plays himself while Emily is played wonderfully by Zoe Kazan. I want to say that I absolutely loved this movie! This movie is so funny, heartwarming, and riveting all at the same time!

It’s an incredibly well written story that was obviously written with a lot of care by the couple themselves, both Kumail and Emily wrote it together and it comes across on screen. Their relationship is adorable and the chemistry that they share is so great and real. Although, I got to say it must have been weird for Emily to watch Zoe Kazan play herself in the movie dating her real life husband. The rest of the cast were outstanding too! Eventually Emily falls into a coma and her parents come to take care of her and have to meet Kumail for the first time and they are played so amazingly by Holly Hunter and Ray Romano. They all manage to create scenes with a great deal of emotion but blend it with comedy beautifully! There are some heartbreaking and emotional moments but this movie is first and foremost a comedy. This movie is laugh out loud funny! I found myself laughing harder than I have in a while during a movie; Kumail is a genius when it comes to comedy. I found myself rooting so hard for everyone involved and got intensely invested by like the 15 minute mark. It definitely helped that I knew going into it that this was a true story. I also really liked that it showed you a part of what Islamic culture is really like through the eyes of Kumail, who was raised in America, and his family.

I honestly can’t recommend this movie enough. You’ll laugh, cry, and cheer the whole time. If you’ve wanted something to cheer you up or just want to see a well put together movie with some stellar acting performances go see The Big Sick you will not regret it! It’s easily one of my favorite movies of the year and will most likely end up in my top 10 by the end of the year in an already pretty incredible year of movies.
