Keanu Review

Synopsis: Friends hatch a plot to retrieve a stolen kitten by posing as drug dealers for a street gang.

If you’re a fan of Key and Peele’s sketch comedy show then you know what you’re in for. This is essentially a really long version of their sketch show, which isn’t a bad thing. It actually does a great job of keeping the story interesting and keeping you invested in the characters. When you look at the plot of this movie it’s ridiculous. Two guys looking for a cat and trying to get it back from a street gang by impersonating some deadly and infamous gangster hitmen dubbed “The Allentown Brothers” and strike a deal to do a job in exchange for their cat Keanu. The kitten or kitten(s) that plays Keanu is the cutest freaking cat ever! What makes this movie enjoyable and funny is the comedic talents and chemistry of Key and Peele. The comedy and the writing is done really well they somehow manage to make some of the weirdest and most awkward situations so funny! I was laughing throughout most of the movie and the comedy while at times over the top it never felt like it was too much. The absurdity of the some of the situations they get in and how they both react is pretty hilarious. I particularly found a scene with Key’s character Clarence was with a few of the gang members handling lookout in van and he convinces them that the famous pop singer George Michael was a black artist with daddy issues just to save face from the fact that he was a huge George Michael fan. I loved how many of the action scenes with gun fights were shot, particularly when the camera zooms in to follow Keanu the kitten during these sequences it goes super close up and cinematic. You can’t help but laugh as you’re seeing this cute kitten running in and out of all this carnage going on around it. Without going into any spoilers I did have some issues with a plot hole in the story on certain events that take place during a drug deal that conflict with events that later happen in the movie. It’s not really that glaring but I did find it odd thinking back on the movie.

Keanu is a good time with some good laughs throughout thanks to Key and Peele’s comedic acting and rather clever writing and jokes. If you’ve got some spare time and want a good laugh you should check it out. Also Fun Fact: that is actually Keanu Reeves voicing Keanu the kitten in the drug trip dream sequence.

Should You See it: Sure, if you want a good time
